Book Review: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

So, the thing I love about book friends is you get to discover new loves. Last year, as you all know, I discovered my love for historical fiction. This year is also off to a strong start with being introduced to Diana Gabaldon – which is quickly turning into my new obsession. Here you’ll find my thoughts on book 1 in the series, but stay tuned … I am already reading book 2!

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

Genre: Historical Fiction, Romance/Time Travel

BUG Rating: 4.5/5

Overall: Despite being an incredibly HUGE book (nearly 900 pages), I flew through Outlander in no time. I found it fascinating, completely mesmerising and loved it! The story felt so unique and I loved the characters and how Gabaldon brought to life their complex personalities throughout the book. It’s the type of book you can just get lost in for hours and not get at all bored with. Also, don’t be fooled into thinking this is just a time travel/romance – it is way more than that. It’s full of some really gory scenes and suspense that will keep your heart racing throughout. I am SO excited to see where book 2 (Dragonfly in Amber) takes us. Pretty sure these books are going to be in my top reads for 2020!

Ye werena the first lass I kissed, he said softly, but I swear you’lll be the last.

The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord…1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire—and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
